Seeing a cockroach in your home or business is never pleasant—and it’s rarely something to ignore.
While cockroaches are generally rare in the Netherlands compared to warmer climates, they do exist and have adapted to the Dutch environment. If you see one, chances are high it is a German cockroach (Blattella germanica) which is a small (between 1.1–1.6 cm), light brown cockroach with two black stripes on its back. They can often be found in places with high heat and moisture, such as restaurants and bakeries, shops, and large housing facilities, where they can truly thrive due to warmth that helps these tropical insects survive and reproduce during the cold winter months.
So, you see a cockroach. First things first: why you should never kill a cockroach. Cockroaches are highly efficient breeders, and their eggs are extremely resilient. German cockroaches, for example, can produce more than 40 eggs in a single egg case. Even if you eliminate the adult insect, any eggs it has already left behind can survive and hatch soon after. This often leads to a sudden appearance of many young cockroaches, making the problem harder to control. In other words, killing one visible cockroach does not solve the problem and may delay proper treatment.
Please, don’t ignore the sighting. A single cockroach usually indicates hidden activity nearby, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, storage areas, or technical spaces.
Clean thoroughly and remove attractants: wipe surfaces, remove food residues, empty waste bins, and reduce moisture. These steps help limit activity but won’t eliminate an infestation on their own.
Seal entry points and hiding places: close gaps around pipes, drains, cracks, and wall joints to reduce movement and spread.
Use traps or baits carefully: incorrect DIY treatments can push cockroaches deeper into a building or spread them to other areas. Targeted placement is essential.
Although generally uncommon, large cockroach infestations do happen in the Netherlands from time to time. Back in 2023, a large infestation took over the whole Reeshof neighborhood in Tilburg, where residents found hundreds of them in their homes, streets, and even cars.
